It is pretty hard to live without coming into contact with someone suffering from diabetes. It is prevalent in our society.
According to the Center for Disease Control, 18.8 million Americans had been diagnosed with diabetes in 2010. They estimate there was another 7 million individuals with the disease, who have not yet been diagnosed. That's over 8% of the national population.
Unfortunately, the fact that diabetes is so prevalent, makes it easy for people to become apathetic about the need to find a cure for this disease. The assumption can easily be made that modern medicine has enabled people to live with, and manage, the disease to the extent that finding a cure is not all that important. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Let's look at few more statistics from the CDC's 2011 Fact Sheet.
- Diabetes is the major cause of heart disease and stroke.
- Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States
- Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure.
- Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in U.S. Adults.
- Diabetes is the leading cause of nontraumatic lower-limb amputation.
Those are some pretty sobering facts. Diabetes isn't simply a disease that people 'live' with. It is also a disease that disables and kills. In addition to these serious complications that can arise as a result of diabetes, a person with diabetes will generally have a harder time fighting off any type of virus or infection than someone without the disease. Close monitoring of blood glucose levels is also important to prevent diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar (nonketotic) coma, both of which can be life threatening.
All diabetics need to monitor their blood glucose levels to some degree. Some may simply use diabetic test strips once a day to check their levels; others may need to test their glucose levels several times a day. Those who have been diagnosed with diabetes must also make adjustments to their diets. Most will also need to take oral medication and/or insulin injections to treat the disease. They must monitor their feet closely to avoid the conditions that can lead to amputation. Diabetes is a life-changing disease in many ways.
Diabetes is also a costly disease. Medical expenses for people with diabetes are typically more than two times the amount of a person without diabetes. They have the ongoing expense of their diabetes test strips, lancets, medications and insulin. There are more frequent doctor visits and more frequent hospital stays as well. These high costs of medical care are just another reason, why it is so important to find a cure for this disease.
Diabetes research continues to work towards finding a cure for diabetes and also for improving current treatment methods. Several non-profit organizations also work to promote awareness of the disease and the life issues related to living with diabetes.
